According to Oregon State University, a research team led by Professor Yanyun Zhao, specializing in eco-friendly food packaging and processing, has achieved significant breakthroughs in the research and development of new sustainable packaging materials using apple pomace as the primary raw material. The production process for apple pomace paper pulp molded packaging materials has successfully obtained the necessary patents.
In 2022, Professor Zhao conducted research on repurposing waste generated during apple juice production, known as apple pomace, as an alternative to recycled newspapers in the paper pulp molding industry.
"At present, apple pomace is commonly either composted or used as animal feed," Zhao explained. His research is aimed at reducing food loss and waste across the entire food supply chain. "We questioned why not transform it into an eco-friendly product that caters to industry demands."
Innovations in Water-Resistant Properties of Apple Pomace Paper Pulp Molded Products
The key to manufacturing apple pomace packaging materials is enhancing their water-resistant properties, allowing them to be suitable not only for liquid packaging but also for packaging moisture-rich foods and for use in damp outdoor environments. In their recently published research, Professor Zhao's team experimented with a formulation process that significantly improves the water-resistant properties of the products. This eco-friendly and biodegradable process also proves to be economically viable.
The research team has also made strides in hydrophobic coatings, requiring a simple additional step to apply a water-repellent coating to the surface of the apple pomace packaging material. This method has demonstrated its feasibility, resulting in outstanding water resistance for the products.
Versatile Applications of Apple Pomace Paper Pulp Molded Products
After apple juice extraction, approximately 25% to 30% of pomace remains. Paper pulp molded products primarily derived from apple pomace have diverse applications, including food takeaway containers, flower pots, beverage crates, drink cups, and outer packaging for fruits and vegetables. These packaging materials are biodegradable and align perfectly with current environmental conservation principles.
